The joy of the holiday season is over, the weather is gloomy and cold, the holiday bills are coming in, and new year’s resolutions may not being going as well as we hoped. All these factors have been mashed into a formula and the answer is Blue Monday. The third Monday in January is supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

Surviving Blue Monday

Get outside into the sunlight. When you are exposed to bright light serotonin levels, the hormone associated with mood, will increase which in turn will elevate your mood.

De-clutter. Organize your home and get rid of things you don’t need. Physical clutter can clutter your mental space by making you feel unfocused. By de-cluttering you will feel less irritated, less distracted, and more productive.

Find something to look forward to. Schedule a coffee date with a friend, go skating or have a party. This will lift your spirits by giving you something fun to look forward to.

Reset your new year’s resolution. If you are down because your new year’s resolution isn't going well, maybe it’s time to reexamine it. What is the significance of your resolution and why is it important to you? In order to keep motivated your resolution needs to mean something to you. Try setting SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely) goals to make your resolution sustainable. And remember, it is never to late to get back on track.

Remember, blue Monday is only the worst day of the year if you let it be.
